PAC? STAC? FAQ

Ofcom has recently introduced new rules that will make switching your mobile to a new operator and keeping the same mobile phone number easier. We are all familiar with the lengthy phone call to our prior mobile phone provider to get the golden ‘PAC’ code. And the frustration it causes when your provider uses this as an opportunity to persuade you to stay. Now, you can simply send a text and keep your mobile number and be rid of the difficulties that are traditionally associated with switching your mobile phone: unnecessary time spent, double payment and loss of service.

Information about this new release is full of tech jargon and acronyms. So, let’s break it down.

What is PAC?
PAC stands for porting authorisation code, which facilitates users to keep the same mobile phone number when changing networks.

How will I go about getting my PAC code under these new rules?
Instead of spending time on hold, you’ll be able to simply send a text ‘PAC’ to 65075. You’ll get a response within a minute.

Can I request my PAC code whilst I’m looking for a provider?
Absolutely. You’ll be able to use your PAC code for 30 days after sending the text before it becomes inactive.

So, what is STAC?
STAC means ‘service termination authorisation code’, and only comes into play if you want to get a new mobile phone number. Text STAC to 75075.

What about early termination charges? How do I know?
If you text INFO to 85075 you’ll receive information as to whether you’re still ‘in contract’ or if you will be charged.
